Cholesterol is a waxy steroid and is transported in the blood stream. It is produced by the liver and is present in foods of animal origin. The understanding that modern medical science has of it has changed dramatically over time. Although it is a major contributor to the plaque that forms on the walls of an artery, the role that it plays in the human body is exceedingly complex.
